Why It Happens and How to Fix It Published 2026-10-21 · Updated 2026-10-21 · 3 min read · [Editorial policy](https://smshallo.com/editorial-policy) **If your Telegram code doesn't arrive, Telegram usually sends it to your other logged-in Telegram apps first, then by SMS, then by phone call. Check any device where you're already signed in, confirm the number is in full international format on a mobile that can receive SMS or calls, wait for the timer, and request a call if SMS fails.** ## How Telegram sends the code Telegram requires a phone number to register, and its FAQ states the phone number is the only way it identifies a user. If you are already signed in on another device, Telegram sends the login code to that Telegram app first, not by SMS. If you have no other active session, Telegram sends an SMS, and can offer a phone call that reads out the code. ## Common causes The code went to your Telegram app on another device (phone, tablet or desktop) instead of SMS. The number was entered in the wrong format, or is a type that can't receive the SMS or call. Network or carrier delays on the SMS, or too many rapid attempts triggering a wait. ## How to fix it 1. Check every device where you are still logged into Telegram — the code often appears there as a message from the Telegram service. 2. Re-enter the number in full international format (+ country code, no leading 0). 3. Wait for the countdown to finish, then choose the phone-call option to hear the code if SMS hasn't arrived. 4. Make sure the number can receive an SMS or call and has signal/data. 5. If you've lost access to all sessions and the number, use Telegram's account-recovery options. ## When a real mobile number helps Telegram needs a number that can receive the SMS or call code. A real mobile number in the correct format receives it reliably; SMS Hallo rents real mobile numbers that show the code in a private inbox from $1.80/month, with a 7-day replacement or 100% refund if it doesn't work. Keep the number for as long as you use the account, because Telegram may ask you to confirm it again when you add a device. ## Sources telegram.org — checked on 2026-10-07: https://telegram.org/faq ## Frequently asked questions **Why did my Telegram code go to the app instead of SMS?** If you are signed in on another device, Telegram sends the code to that Telegram app first for security. Check your other sessions. (Source: telegram.org, checked on 2026-10-07.) **Can Telegram call me with the code?** Yes. After the SMS countdown, Telegram can place a phone call that reads out the login code; choose that option if the SMS hasn't arrived. **Does Telegram need a phone number?** Yes. Telegram's FAQ says the phone number is the only way it identifies a user, so a reachable number is required. (Source: telegram.org, checked on 2026-10-07.) **Will an SMS Hallo number work for Telegram?** A real mobile number that can receive SMS or calls works for Telegram. If a specific number doesn't, replace it free within 7 days or get a 100% refund. ## Related - [telegram-number](https://smshallo.com/telegram-number) - [guides/second-phone-number-for-whatsapp](https://smshallo.com/guides/second-phone-number-for-whatsapp) - [features/non-voip-numbers](https://smshallo.com/features/non-voip-numbers) ## Related reading [### How to Get a Second Phone Number for WhatsApp Without a New SIMGet a second WhatsApp number without a new SIM: rent a real mobile number, verify it by SMS or call, and keep the account secure for future logins.](https://smshallo.com/guides/second-phone-number-for-whatsapp) [### How to Use Telegram Without Your Personal Phone NumberCreate a Telegram account with a separate number, hide it from other users, and make sure you can always log in again on a new device.](https://smshallo.com/guides/telegram-without-personal-number) [### How to Verify a Google Account With a Number You ControlVerify your Google account with a phone number you control and keep: how phone verification works, common errors, and how to keep your account recoverable.](https://smshallo.com/guides/google-account-verification-number) ## More guides [### Instagram or Facebook Confirmation Code Not Received?
