# Telegram Number Long Term: Keep Your Account Safe

Published 2026-10-01 · Updated 2026-10-01 · 9 min read

**To keep a Telegram account safe on a rented number for the long run, turn on two-step verification with a strong password and a recovery email, review your active sessions regularly, and keep the number renewed or on auto-renew. Telegram's own FAQ says the phone number is how it identifies users, so whoever has the number can reach the account. If you plan to stop renewing, change the number in Telegram's settings first.**

## Why the number matters so much on Telegram

On Telegram, your phone number is not just a contact detail. It is the key to the account. Telegram's FAQ explains that the phone number is currently the only way it identifies a user and that it does not collect additional information, so whoever has the number has the account.

That is a simple rule, and it has a clear consequence for anyone using a rented number. As long as you control the number, you can log in and receive codes. If you lose control of the number, for example because it expires and is later given to someone else, the account becomes much harder to protect.

The good news is that Telegram gives you several tools to reduce that risk, and a rented real mobile number can be kept for as long as you need it. The rest of this guide explains how to combine the two so a Telegram account stays yours for years, not weeks.

## Step 1: turn on two-step verification and add a recovery email

Two-step verification is the single most important setting for a long-term Telegram account. According to Telegram's FAQ, once it is enabled you need both the login code and your password to log in, and you can set up a recovery email address to help regain access if you forget the password. The FAQ also notes that, with this setting on, the phone number alone is no longer enough to log in.

1. Open Telegram and go to Settings, then Privacy and Security.

2. Open Two-Step Verification and create a strong password that you do not use anywhere else.

3. Add a password hint that means something only to you, and never write the password itself in the hint.

4. Add a recovery email address that you check regularly and that has its own strong password and two-factor protection.

5. Confirm the email when Telegram asks you to, and store the password in a password manager.

With two-step verification in place, a person who somehow received a login code for your number would still need your password. That makes a huge difference if anything ever goes wrong with the number.

## Step 2: keep an eye on active sessions

Telegram lets you stay logged in on many devices at once. Its FAQ says you can log in from as many devices as you like, all at the same time. This is convenient, but every logged-in device is a door into your account, so it is worth checking the list from time to time.

In Settings, open Devices (shown as Active Sessions in some versions, under Privacy and Security). You will see each phone, computer and web session that is signed in. According to Telegram's FAQ, you can terminate sessions on devices you no longer use from this screen.

Make it a habit to check the list every month or two, and end any session you do not recognize right away. If you see something unfamiliar, also change your two-step verification password.

Keeping at least one trusted device logged in also helps you. Telegram's FAQ says that if you have recently used Telegram on another device, it may send the login code through Telegram instead of by SMS. A trusted session is therefore a useful backup if you ever need to log in again.

## What happens if a rented number expires

A rented number is yours only while the rental is active. With SMS Hallo, after a number expires it may be given to someone else. If that happens to the number on your Telegram account, the next person to rent it could receive the login codes for it.

Two-step verification limits the damage, because a login code on its own is not enough. But you should not rely on that alone. The safest approach is simple: never let a number expire while it is linked to an account you care about.

Telegram also has its own clock to keep in mind. According to its FAQ, if you stop using Telegram and do not come online for at least 18 months, the account is deleted along with its messages, media and contacts, and you can change that period in Settings. Opening the app regularly keeps the account active, and keeping the number renewed keeps it reachable.

## Renewal and auto-renew: the easiest protection

SMS Hallo numbers can be kept as long as you like. You can renew for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months at a time, or turn on auto-renew so the rental continues without you having to remember a date.

For a long-term Telegram account, the 12-month plan is usually the simplest choice. Pricing starts from $1.80 per month on the 12-month plan ($21.60 billed yearly), the same in every one of our 181 countries. Prices for the 1-, 3- and 6-month plans are shown when you choose a number.

Payment is made in USDT or USDC on Tron, BNB Chain, Polygon, Base or Solana, either from a prepaid wallet or directly for a number. If you pay from the prepaid wallet, keep enough balance there before the renewal date. The minimum wallet top-up is $5.

Each number also includes unlimited incoming SMS and calls, 500 outgoing SMS and 1,000 outgoing calling minutes per month, and the private inbox means only you see the codes while you rent the number.

## Changing the number on your Telegram account

If you decide to move the account to a different number, do it before the old one expires. According to Telegram's FAQ, you can change your number and keep everything, including your contacts, messages, media and secret chats.

1. Make sure you can receive SMS on the new number.

2. In Telegram, open Settings and tap your phone number, then choose Change Number.

3. Enter the new number and the code Telegram sends to it.

4. Check that your two-step verification password and recovery email are still set up correctly.

5. Only after the change is complete, let the old number lapse.

Telegram's FAQ warns that you should make sure you have access to the connected phone number, otherwise you risk losing access to the account. Changing numbers while you still control both is the safe way to do it. Note also that Telegram treats each phone number as a separate account, so moving to a new number is different from signing up a second account.

## A simple long-term checklist

Use this list once when you set up the account, and then review it a few times a year.

1. Two-step verification is on, with a unique password stored in a password manager.

2. A recovery email is set and you can still log in to that email.

3. Only devices you recognize appear in Devices or Active Sessions.

4. At least one trusted device stays logged in.

5. The rented number is on a long plan or auto-renew, and any prepaid wallet balance you rely on covers the renewal.

6. You open Telegram regularly so the inactivity timer never runs out.

Use your Telegram account in line with Telegram's terms. SMS Hallo numbers are for privacy and legitimate second numbers, not for bulk or fake accounts or for returning to a platform after a ban, as our Acceptable Use Policy explains.

## If the number does not work at the start

Each app decides which numbers it accepts, so we do not promise that Telegram will accept a specific number. Three guarantees cover you instead. A 7-day free replacement lets you swap for another available number in the same country, free, up to 3 times, keeping the plan and expiry date. Works or 100% refund means that if the number does not work with the app it was rented for, for example the code never arrives, you can request within 7 days and get 100% of what you paid. The 7-day money-back guarantee gives a full refund within 7 days, no questions asked, if no call or SMS has been made or received on the number.

Once the number works and your account is set up, the steps above are what keep it working over the long term.

## Frequently asked questions

**Can I keep a Telegram account on a rented number for years?**

Yes, as long as you keep renewing the number. SMS Hallo numbers can be renewed for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months at a time, or set to auto-renew. Combine that with Telegram's two-step verification, a recovery email and regular session checks, and the account stays under your control.

**What happens to my Telegram account if the rented number expires?**

After expiry, the number may be given to someone else, who could then receive Telegram login codes for it. Telegram's FAQ says whoever has the number has the account. Two-step verification adds a password barrier, but the safest approach is to renew the number or change it in Telegram before it expires.

**Does two-step verification fully protect my account?**

It adds strong protection. According to Telegram's FAQ, with two-step verification enabled you need both the code and your password to log in, so a code alone is not enough. It is still important to keep your number renewed, use a unique password and set a recovery email you can access.

**How do I change the phone number on my Telegram account?**

In Telegram, open Settings, tap your phone number and choose Change Number, then confirm with the code sent to the new number. According to Telegram's FAQ, you keep your contacts, messages, media and secret chats. Do this while you still have access to the old number.

**How do I see which devices are logged in to my Telegram?**

Open Settings and go to Devices, shown as Active Sessions under Privacy and Security in some versions. It lists every phone, computer and web session that is signed in. You can end sessions you no longer use or do not recognize from that screen.

**Will Telegram delete my account if I do not use it?**

According to Telegram's FAQ, an account that does not come online for at least 18 months is deleted along with its messages, media and contacts. You can change that period in Settings. Opening Telegram regularly keeps the account active.

**Is auto-renew available for SMS Hallo numbers?**

Yes. You can turn on auto-renew so the rental continues, or renew manually for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months at a time. Pricing starts from $1.80 per month on the 12-month plan ($21.60 billed yearly). If you pay from the prepaid wallet, keep enough balance there before the renewal date.
