How Steam verifies your number

Steam does not need a phone number to create an account; your account starts with an email address, and Steam Guard sends codes by email by default once that email is verified. A phone number comes in later, when you add it under Account Details, Contact Info, or when you set up the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator in the Steam Mobile App. In both cases Steam sends an SMS with a confirmation code that you type in to prove the number is yours.

Valve strongly recommends adding a phone number because it makes account recovery much easier. With a verified number you can reset your password by SMS, move the Mobile Authenticator from one phone to another, and generate backup codes, which requires entering an SMS code sent to the number. Only one phone number can be linked to a Steam account at a time, and Steam says you can set up the authenticator without a number by choosing the "I don't have access to a phone number" option, though you lose those SMS recovery options.

Steam states that it does not allow certain numbers, including VoIP numbers and numbers that cannot receive texts, and that some carriers that use VoIP technology are not supported. SMS Hallo rents real mobile numbers in the local mobile format, but Steam makes its own decision when you enter a number. Steam also notes that its texts can come from a 6-digit sender, that it pauses SMS if too many were sent recently, and that it sometimes delivers codes through Telegram in countries where the number has an active Telegram account.

Steam allows the same number on more than one account, but it says accounts sharing a number may be treated as the same identity, and for some games a VAC or game ban on one account also applies to other accounts with that number. That is a strong reason to keep one dedicated number for your own account and never use a number for anything that breaks the Steam Subscriber Agreement, which SMS Hallo's Acceptable Use Policy also forbids.

How to verify Steam with an SMS Hallo number

1. Pick the number's country — Choose the country you live in or the country your Steam account is registered to, then rent a real mobile number on SMS Hallo and pay with USDT or USDC.
2. Open Account Details — In the Steam client or website, open your profile name menu, select Account Details, and under Contact Info choose Add a phone number.
3. Enter the number in international format — Select the right country prefix and enter the number exactly as shown in your SMS Hallo dashboard, then select Next.
4. Type the confirmation code — Open your SMS Hallo inbox, copy the code with one tap and enter it in Steam before requesting another one.
5. Finish your recovery setup — If you use the Steam Mobile App, add the authenticator and write down the recovery code it shows, then turn on auto-renew for the number.

Troubleshooting Steam verification

Steam says the number is VoIP or not allowed

Steam decides which numbers it accepts. Use the free replacement within 7 days to try another number in the same country, or request a 100% refund if it doesn't work with Steam.

The SMS does not arrive

Wait a few minutes and use the resend link once. Steam pauses SMS when too many were sent, so repeated requests can make it slower. If nothing arrives, swap the number free within 7 days or request a refund.

"Invalid phone number" or wrong country

Check that the country prefix matches the number and that you did not add an extra leading zero. Steam guesses your location, so select the country manually if needed.

Steam says the code is wrong

Only the newest code works. If you pressed resend, use the latest message in your SMS Hallo inbox.

Trading or Market is on hold

Steam places temporary trade and market restrictions after some security changes, such as moving or removing the authenticator. This is a Steam rule and not related to the number.

Code sent to Telegram instead

Steam says it sometimes uses Telegram for delivery in some countries. If the number has no Telegram account, the code comes by SMS; if it is unclear, ask Steam to resend.

Which country to choose for Steam

For Steam, the most sensible choice is a number from the country where you live and where your Steam account and payment method are registered. It keeps your contact details consistent with the rest of your account, which helps if you ever go through Steam Support's recovery process. Do not pick a country to change store pricing or region; a phone number is for security and recovery only. No country is certain to be accepted, so rely on the free replacement and refund if Steam declines a number.
