How Upwork verifies your number

Upwork asks you to verify your phone number before you post a job or submit a proposal. Its help center explains that this protects the marketplace by reducing scams, spam and fraud. The code is meant to arrive right away; if it does not show up within a few minutes, Upwork suggests checking that the number is typed correctly and trying again. Upwork states plainly that it cannot verify VoIP numbers and asks for a non-VoIP number instead.

Upwork allows only one account per person, and that single account can be used as a freelancer, client and agency. If you sign up again with a phone number that is already tied to an existing account, Upwork shows an error and points you to the Forgot password flow to recover the original account. SMS Hallo's Acceptable Use Policy also forbids using numbers to create duplicate or fake accounts, so use your number only for your own single account.

For login security, Upwork offers two-step verification with a six-digit code sent to your phone, a code from an authenticator app, a prompt in the Upwork mobile app, or a security question. You can enable several methods and choose any of them when challenged. If you lose access to every method, Upwork has a Reset your Security Information form, and its team verifies your identity before restoring access.

Phone verification is not the same as identity verification. Upwork may ask freelancers to verify their identity with a valid government-issued photo ID, a short video call or photo check, and, for U.S.-only jobs, proof of location; names must match across your ID, withdrawal method and tax information, and Upwork gives seven days to complete it before an account may be put on hold. A phone number from SMS Hallo only receives the text or call code. It does not replace, skip or influence Upwork's identity checks, and our Acceptable Use Policy forbids trying to use it for that.

How to verify Upwork with an SMS Hallo number

1. Pick a country — Choose a country on the SMS Hallo numbers page, ideally the one that matches your Upwork profile location and your ID.
2. Rent the number — Sign up with email and password, rent a real mobile number and pay with USDT or USDC. The number appears in your dashboard right away.
3. Add it on Upwork — When Upwork asks you to verify before a proposal or job post, or under Password and Security in settings, enter the number with the correct country code.
4. Enter the code — Open your SMS Hallo inbox, tap to copy the code and paste it into Upwork. If Upwork offers a call instead, answer it in the browser dialer.
5. Add backup methods — Set up an authenticator app or the Upwork app prompt as well, and turn on auto-renew for the number.

Troubleshooting Upwork verification

No code after a few minutes

Upwork says codes should arrive almost instantly. Check the country code and number, then request one new code. If nothing arrives, use the free replacement within 7 days or request a 100% refund.

Number cannot be verified

Upwork does not verify VoIP numbers and makes its own decision on each number. If it refuses yours, swap it for another number in the same country for free within 7 days.

Number already linked to an account

The number is tied to an existing Upwork account. If that account is yours, recover it with Forgot password. If it is not, use the free replacement to get a different number.

Locked out after changing numbers

Use another two-step method you set up, such as an authenticator app or the security question. If none works, Upwork's Reset your Security Information form is the official route.

Asked for ID verification

This is a separate Upwork check that needs your own government ID and, sometimes, a video or photo check. Complete it directly with Upwork; a phone number does not change this step.

Code rejected

Only the most recent code is usually valid. Request a fresh one and paste it straight from your SMS Hallo inbox.

Choose the country that matches where you actually live and work and what your Upwork profile and ID show. Upwork compares your profile country with your ID during identity checks, so a number from the same country keeps your account details consistent and easy to explain.
