“This phone number cannot be used for verification” (Google): Causes and Fixes
Google shows “This phone number cannot be used for verification” when the number has already created too many accounts, or is a type Google won't accept (often a VoIP or virtual number). Google Account Help advises trying a different number, for example one from a different carrier. A real mobile number that hasn't been used for many accounts is accepted most often.
What the error means
To limit abuse, Google caps how many accounts each phone number can create. When a number reaches that limit, or is a type Google doesn't accept, verification fails with this message.
Google Account Help explicitly says that if you see this error you should use a different number, such as one from a friend, family member or a different carrier.
Common causes
The number has already been used to create or verify several Google accounts.
The number is a VoIP or virtual number; Google often declines these (Google Voice itself is classed as non-fixed VoIP).
Wrong format, or a number that cannot receive the SMS or call code.
How to fix it
1. Try a different number that hasn't been used for many Google accounts.
2. Use a real mobile number (a different carrier can help) rather than a VoIP/virtual number.
3. Enter it in full international format and choose SMS or the call option.
4. If you're recovering an existing account, use Google's account-recovery flow instead of adding a new number.
When a real mobile number helps
Because Google prefers real mobile numbers that haven't been over-used, a fresh real mobile number is accepted most often. SMS Hallo rents real mobile numbers that receive the Google code privately from $1.80/month, with a 7-day replacement or 100% refund if a number doesn't work.
No number type is accepted by every service every time, so the guarantees cover the cases where a specific number is declined.

Frequently asked questions
Why won't Google accept my number?
Usually because the number has already created too many Google accounts, or it is a VoIP/virtual number Google declines. Google suggests trying a different number. (Source: support.google.com, checked on 2026-10-07.)
Does Google accept Google Voice or VoIP numbers?
Often not. Google Voice is classed as non-fixed VoIP, and Google frequently declines virtual numbers for account verification.
How many accounts can one number verify on Google?
Google doesn't publish the exact figure but limits accounts per number to prevent abuse; once reached, the number is rejected. (Source: support.google.com, checked on 2026-10-07.)
Will a real mobile number from SMS Hallo work?
A real mobile number that hasn't been over-used is accepted most often. If a specific number is declined, replace it free within 7 days or get a 100% refund.
