How to Use Telegram Without Your Personal Phone Number

Why Telegram asks for a number

Telegram requires a phone number to create an account and uses it to send login codes. By default, contacts who have your number saved can also find you on Telegram, and depending on settings other people may see your number.

Consider whether to sync your phone contacts. Syncing helps you find friends but also shares your address book with the app.

Remember that a contact who already saved your number can still recognise it. Hiding the number protects you from strangers, not from people you have already given it to.

Choosing the right country

Telegram works with numbers from many countries, and the country of the number does not limit where you can use the app.

Pick a country whose numbers you are comfortable being associated with, and one you plan to keep renewing. Changing the number later is possible, but it takes a few steps.

If friends will add you by number, a number from your own country is easier for them. If they will only use your username, any country works.

Whatever you choose, keep a note of the number and its renewal date in a safe place, separate from the Telegram account itself, so you can find it if you ever need to log in again.

Don't lose access to the account

When you log in on a new device, Telegram usually sends the code to your other logged-in devices first, and by SMS or call if needed. If you only have one device, the number is your way back in.

Keep the number rented for as long as you use the account, or switch on auto-renew.

Set a two-step verification password in Settings, Privacy and Security, Two-Step Verification, and add a recovery email. With it, a login code alone is not enough to access your account.

Check Settings, Devices from time to time and end any session you do not recognise.

If you ever want to move the account to another number, use Telegram's change-number option in your profile settings while you still control the current number.

Troubleshooting

The code does not come by SMS: check whether Telegram sent it to another device where you are already logged in. That is the default behaviour.

Too many attempts: Telegram may ask you to wait before sending another code. Wait rather than retrying repeatedly.

The number is not accepted: replace it with another number in the same country free within 7 days, up to 3 times, or request a 100% refund if it does not work for Telegram.

Common mistakes

Signing up with a free public receive-SMS number. Anyone can read those codes and log into your account.

Leaving the phone number visible to Everybody after signing up.

Letting the number expire. After expiry it may be given to someone else, and you may be unable to log in on a new device.

Using separate numbers to return after a ban or create many accounts. That breaks Telegram's rules and is not what a second number is for.
