Google Voice Not Available in My Country: What Now?

Google Voice Not Available in My Country: What Now?

According to Google's help pages, the personal version of Google Voice and its standalone plans are available only in the US, while Google Voice for business through Google Workspace offers local numbers in 14 countries and regions. If you live elsewhere, the honest options are a local SIM or eSIM, other calling apps, or a rented real mobile number such as SMS Hallo's, available in 181 countries. Do not misrepresent your location to Google to get a Voice number.

Where Google Voice is available

Google Voice is not a worldwide service. Google's help page that explains Voice subscription types lists the free personal Google Voice and the Voice Starter and Standard standalone plans as available in the US only. A separate Google Voice help page on the end of legacy Google Voice states plainly that Google Voice is only available in the US for that service.

Google Voice for business is broader. On the same subscription page, Google lists its Voice Starter, Standard and Premier add-ons for Google Workspace with local phone numbers in 14 countries and regions. Google's Workspace page on supported countries names them as Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US, excluding some US territories.

In other words, if you are an individual outside the US, a personal Google Voice number is not offered to you. If you run a business in one of the listed countries, a paid Workspace plan may be an option, and Google's administrator help pages explain the requirements. Availability can change, so check Google's own pages before you plan around it; we checked them on the date shown on this guide.

Even inside the US, Google's setup page says that if you are in the US you can choose your own number, which shows how closely the personal service is tied to being located there.

Why people outside the US look for Google Voice

Most people who search for Google Voice from abroad want one of a few things: a US number for apps and services that expect one, a second number to keep their personal number private, cheap calls to the US, or a number that stays the same while they travel.

Each of those needs can be met in other ways. The right choice depends on whether you need mobile data, whether you mainly receive codes and calls or also make many calls, and whether the number has to be tied to your identity for banking or government services.

It helps to be honest about the goal before you pick a tool. A number for messaging apps and sign-ups is a very different job from a number your bank will accept, and some services only accept a number registered in your name in your own country.

Alternatives that work outside the US

Rented real mobile numbers. SMS Hallo rents real mobile numbers, in each country's local mobile format, in 181 countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom. You use the number in a web browser, so there is no SIM card, no second phone, no ID documents and no local address needed; sign-up is an email and a password. Every number includes unlimited incoming SMS, unlimited incoming calls, 500 outgoing SMS per month and 1,000 outgoing calling minutes per month.

Local SIMs and eSIMs. If you need mobile data and a number for daily life in your own country, a local carrier SIM or eSIM is usually the best fit. Many countries require ID registration for SIMs, and the rules vary, but this is also the kind of number banks and government services are most likely to accept.

Other calling and messaging apps. Many internet calling and messaging apps offer free calls between their own users, and some sell numbers or calling credit in certain countries. Features, prices and availability differ by app and by country, so compare them on the providers' own websites.

For business, if your company is in one of the countries Google lists for Workspace, Google Voice through a Workspace add-on may be worth comparing as well.

How SMS Hallo compares for common Google Voice uses

For receiving verification codes, SMS Hallo shows incoming messages in a private dashboard inbox, detects codes and lets you copy them with one tap. It works with WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Facebook, Google, TikTok and most apps and sites that verify by SMS or call, although no provider can promise that every app will always accept a given number.

For privacy, only you see the messages while you rent the number. It is not a free public receive-SMS site, and inboxes are never published.

For staying reachable abroad, the number stays the same whichever country you are in, as long as you have an internet connection. You can keep it by renewing for 1, 3, 6 or 12 months at a time or by turning on auto-renew. After a rental expires the number may be given to someone else, so renew any number linked to important accounts.

Prices start from $1.80/month on the 12-month plan ($21.60 billed yearly), the same in every country, with no setup fees. Payment is in USDT or USDC stablecoins on Tron, BNB Chain, Polygon, Base or Solana.

Where SMS Hallo is not the right tool: it is not a mobile data plan, and it must not be used to get past identity (KYC) or security checks, to return to a service after a ban, or to create fake or bulk accounts. For banks and government services, keep the number registered in your name.

What not to do

Do not misrepresent your location to Google to obtain or keep a Google Voice number. That includes pretending to be in the US with tools that hide where you are, or borrowing someone else's US number to complete Google's setup. Google Voice has its own terms and policies, and breaking them can put your Google Voice number, and possibly your wider Google Account, at risk.

Be careful with offers to sell you a ready-made Google Voice account. You would be relying on an account created by someone else, which may break Google's rules, can be taken back, and may expose your messages to the seller.

Do not use a free public receive-SMS website to set up important accounts. Anyone can read those inboxes, so anyone can see your codes, and the numbers are shared by many people.

Finally, do not move important accounts to any number you might lose. Whether it is a rented number, a prepaid SIM or a Voice number, keep it active for as long as your accounts depend on it.

Getting started with a rented number

If a rented real mobile number fits your needs, setup takes a few minutes.

1. Create an SMS Hallo account with an email and a password.

2. Choose the country you need, for example the United States if apps expect a US number, or your own country for local contacts.

3. Pick a plan length and pay with USDT or USDC, either from your wallet or directly for the number. The payment window shows the exact amount, address and QR code, with a 10-minute countdown.

4. Enter the number in the app in international format and watch your dashboard inbox for the code.

Every rental is covered by three guarantees. You get a 7-day free replacement: swap for another available number in the same country, free, up to 3 times, and the new number keeps the plan and expiry date. If the number doesn't work with the app it was rented for, for example the code never arrives, request within 7 days and get a 100% refund of what you paid. And there is a 7-day money-back guarantee: a full refund within 7 days, no questions asked, if no call or SMS has been made or received on the number.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Voice available outside the US?

For individuals, no. Google's help pages list the free personal Google Voice and the Starter and Standard standalone plans as US only. Google Voice add-ons for Google Workspace offer local numbers in 14 countries and regions, including Canada, the UK and several European countries, according to Google's Workspace help. Check Google's current pages, because availability can change.

Can I get a Google Voice number if I live in India, Nigeria or the Philippines?

Not as a personal user, because Google describes personal Google Voice as US only, and those countries are not on Google's list of Workspace Voice countries. Look at local SIM or eSIM plans, other calling apps, or a rented real mobile number. SMS Hallo offers real mobile numbers, including US numbers, in 181 countries.

Is it okay to use a VPN to sign up for Google Voice?

We do not recommend misrepresenting your location to Google in any way. Google Voice has its own terms and policies, and breaking them can put your Voice number and possibly your Google Account at risk. If you are outside the countries Google supports, choose a service that is actually offered where you live.

What is the closest alternative to Google Voice for people abroad?

It depends on what you used Google Voice for. For receiving codes, texts and calls on a US or other foreign number, a rented real mobile number such as SMS Hallo's works in a browser from anywhere. For mobile data and daily calls, a local SIM or eSIM is better. For free calls to friends, many internet messaging apps already cover that.

Can I get a US number from outside the US without Google Voice?

Yes. SMS Hallo rents real US mobile numbers that you can use from any country through a web browser, with no SIM, ID documents or US address. Plans start from $1.80/month on the 12-month plan ($21.60 billed yearly). Our guide to getting a US phone number from outside the US covers the details and the limits.

Will a rented number work for WhatsApp or Telegram like Google Voice?

SMS Hallo numbers work with WhatsApp, Telegram and most apps that verify by SMS or call, but no provider can promise that every app will always accept a number. That is why every rental has a 7-day free replacement up to 3 times, a 100% refund within 7 days if it doesn't work with the app, and a 7-day money-back guarantee if the number was never used.

Should I buy a Google Voice account from a reseller?

No. A ready-made account was created by someone else, may break Google's rules, can be reclaimed or disabled, and may let the seller see your messages or recover the account. If personal Google Voice is not offered where you live, use a service that openly supports your country instead.
